Culture?

Today, I've felt like I'm in the middle of a really deep, really big river, about to go over a waterfall. Without a life jacket on.  I made a mistake yesterday. Not just a simple "oops, brush it off" mistake. A Big, Scary, Team Changing, Cultural mistake. And in the aftermath, I find myself in a mix of emotions. But then, while I was having my little pity party, God brought to my attention two things. 1. If there ever was a river, and if I was flailing around in it, my teammates would be standing on both sides, throwing life jackets and jumping in after me. Because we...

James 1:27

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” –James 1:27   I have never taken this verse literally before. I know that our religion is not complete by simply believing, we must act on that belief; but I have never felt convicted to literally go out and visit orphans and widows in their affliction. This Friday we went to an orphanage for the first time. When I walked in there was a little girl standing on a bench, she looked at me with the sweetest...

Do I Have To?

We went to the children's hospital this week. I was strangely excited. This was our third trip, and my first with no apprehension. Those that know me well know I am not the biggest fan of hospitals, so it was strange for me to look forward to such an event. My group went to two rooms, praying for the children and their parents. The latter room was the "preemies" room, or the premature babies room. There were no parents present in this room, and the children were the smallest babies I have ever seen, yet infinately the most precious as well. I walked around the room, stopping...

Lo siento. No entiendo.

This is a phrase I have become very familiar with here in Guatemala.  “Lo siento. No entiendo.” Translates to “I’m sorry. I don’t understand.” I haven’t had one conversation with a local that does not include me saying this at least once. The communication barrier has been a huge struggle for me. Like I said in my last blog, how am I supposed to share Jesus with the Guatemalans if I can’t communicate with them? I just keep thinking to myself, “If only I could ask...

Caught in the Crosshairs

Last week, our team visited the children’s hospital twice: once to pray and once to put on a special program for the Dia de los Ninos (day of the children). The children’s hospital in Puerto Barrios is one of two in the whole country, so people come from all around for treatment of their precious ones. The first time we went, I wandered around from room to room with a small group, praying for the mamas and their babies, using my meager Spanish to inquire what had happened or what they were sick with, and encouraging them with a smile or a quiet song. Yesterday, I had a little...
