I Can’t Save You

“Before me no God was formed nor will there be one after me. I, even I, am The Lord and apart from me there is no savior” Isaiah 43:11-12   Thinking back to four weeks ago I realized something really unfortunate. As a baby Christian who honestly knew nothing about missionary work, I came into this mission trip with a “Savior’s mentality.” So here we are three weeks into this mission trip, standing ankle deep in rotting garbage and Vicks Vapor Rub under our noses. As we do every week there is worship, prayer, the most excited hand washing I have ever...

A New Normal.

We have only been in Antigua about a week, but some things have already become normal and routine. Here are a few things that we are used to already :   1. Having PB&J for lunch daily.   2. The three alarm clocks we don't have to set: squirrels dancing on our thin roof, the neighborhood rooster, and the church bells that ring every hour.   3. People peeing in the street. Yes, women too.    4. Nutso driving. Our host informed us "Cars are not your friends here." We are learning that statement is 100% accurate.    5. The pouring rain and thunder...

night two at the orphanage: complete!

I don’t know what it is about that place that draws me in. Our first time working the night shift at the orphanage was so hard, so when I heard myself asking the director to let us come again I immediately began dreading it just a tiny bit. But maybe this excerpt from my journal entry from the first night at the orphanage (written at 2:26 AM) will help you understand why I had to go back: +++ “Me and Joybelle are sitting in a closet in room #4 at the orphanage. I can hear teeth grinding, people snoring, and moaning. It’s kind of eerie. It’s been an amazing experience...

One Night at the Orphanage

My heart was fluttering. Goosebumps crept up my  back.             Jesus, calm my nerves. We walked up to the orphanage gate with a couple getting handsy at the door.             Jesus, you have a sense of humor. It was 6:30 pm, normally our curfew, and my night was just beginning. Earlier Friday Chelsey had asked the head nurse, director, and boss of the cerebral palsy orphanage if we could man the night shift alongside the nurses. While she asked in Spanish, I speed-prayed in...

San Pedro Evening Ministry

Life here in San Pedro, Guatemala in a house with 19 people definitely gets interesting. Random dance parties happen. Spontaneous worship happens. I’m not shocked anymore to find myself brushing my teeth in the bathroom while someone’s on the toilet and someone else is in the shower. It’s easy to get caught up in this community. These 19 awesome people. This family. But today, yet again, God stepped in and reminded me of the larger community we’re called to be a part of. We’ve dubbed our newest unofficial ministry “San Pedro Evening Ministry.”...
