No touches the Walker!

Whats up! So this is my second blog and my first in Guatemala, sorry it’s taken so long. Just been busy. Well from the flight in, till now it’s been an eye opener. It’s an incredibly beautiful place, but everywhere you look it’s completely different from home that’s for sure. While driving up here the first day I witnessed a fatality from a car wreck. Unlike the U.S. and other countries, the Guatemalan government is to poor to have cops in force street laws. So you can imagine it’s pretty dangerous. Speaking of Guatemalan law enforcement, the police that they...

A normal day in the life of Derek… In Guatemala

So… This is my first blog. The deal is… I’ve been in the old Guatemala (there’s not a “new” Guatemala, or an “old” Guatemala, that’s merely a phrase) for about three weeks now. I would like to say that I just didn’t have time to write a blog prior to my first installment, but that’s not true. The truth is, things just got hectic as soon as we got here and wasn’t able to explain to you fine people what happens here on the trip. So here it is, and I’m just going to tell you about what goes on throughout the daily schedule...

God in Guatemala

Arriving at the airport, I was nervous, anxious, and excited. There were different emotions going through as I was soon going to meet my fellow teammates. My parents and I found one of my teammates and we quickly got to know each other. I felt much comfortable after meeting her. Not long after, many more people showed up and I got to meet all of them. Training camp was fun and not at all what I was expecting. Guatemala is gorgeous. Puerto Barrios is a small port town with a similar town right next to it called Santo Tomas de Castillo.            ...

The Pharisee in Me

Proverbs 21:2"Every way of man is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts."   God showed me that I have a tendency to be a creature of habitand this can have negative consequences on my spiritual life. In our relationship with Him motions of repetitiveness can take away some of our passion in who we are and what we do as Christians. Let me explain. In the morning when I first wake up, I formed a good habit of giving thanks to God and praying for the day that lies ahead. Over time it has formed a religious tendency in me. One morning I got up and didn't pray....

A Very Happy Guatemalan Birthday

Yesterday (September 20th…I wrote this on the 21st.) was my 22ndbirthday and God blessed me with the opportunity to celebrate it with my amazing team in Guatemala. Little did I know the celebration would start at 5AM.  I heard rustling outside of my bedroom door and then a round of firecrackers exploded as my whole team flooded into my room and began singing Happy Birthday. I have become accustomed to hearing those firecrackers around Guatemala and so my roommates were more scared of the firecrackers than I was. =P I quickly...

The Call to Go Deeper

This week has been a slower week, with a lot of time spent reading, worshiping and getting to know my teammates more. I guess ¨longer term¨ trips are sort of like that. Not every day is packed with endless activities and things to do. It´s been interesting and different, but I do think God is using it for the good of our team. Time to know Him deeper. Time to really examine our hearts. I know for me personally He has used some of this down time for me to really come face to face with Him. It´s good, but scary too. I´m realizing that when God calls you to go deeper...
